TRAINING NOTES
In general we tend to use soft leather drag lines for close work, and the synthetic beta lines when line strength is important. The beta lines are sewn, no rivets are used. They are available in many colors and with heavy or small clasps. The half inch lengths in 9 and 15 feet are the most versatile. For tracking we recommend the 3/8 inch so the line does not feel heavy. For protection work with harness use the thick 3/4 inch heavy beta lines for easier gripping.
The Euro leather lines listed here are of exceptional durability and softness. They are praised by customers using them in harsh conditions, including the cold wet climate of Canada, and the hot dry climate of Iraq. We use this leather for drag lines, thin leashes that can hang from the collar and hang long enough to grab when needed. The leather is now available in red or black.
Our dogs are working in various sports, from Schutzhund, to Mondioring, to hunt tests and search and rescue. Each venue has their own favorite collars, but there are two types almost all of use use at one time or other. These are the Herm Sprenger heavy but small link fur savers and the nylon snap collars (Volhard collars). The small links of these fur savers, and the snap in the nylon collar allow for a snug fit. For the fur savers measure around the widest part of the head and include flattened ears. The nylon snap should be worn high on the neck behind the ears and above the jugular. There should only be an inch or two of collar passing through the ring.
